How to be Memorable in Networking Situations

Business networking is one of the primary ways that people become introduced to each other in the business world. The only way anyone can truly benefit, however, is if they are memorable and charismatic. Otherwise, any contact information you give will probably be discarded, and you will not gain anything. There are ways to ensure that you will be memorable, and therefore can expect the majority of who you networked with to contact you in the future.

To be memorable, it seems logical that you would need a lot of time to impose your personality on someone. In a networking situation, this is not the case. In fact, chats are supposed to be short, as the point of networking is to become introduced to many people, not just a few. During the short amount of time you have, you need to be assertive and confident, and explain yourself with actions instead of words. People are better at remembering what someone does than what they are.

Others will call you (or you can call them, if the case warrants it) if they liked you and believe you can offer them something. To get them to like you, ask them meaningful questions about their lives and endeavors, and actively listen. Finding out their interests and offering something they can use gives you an opening to a future conversation. Remember, it is the subsequent conversations in which all benefits will be reaped, for both parties. A networking event is just where the stage is set for all future encounters.

Some fundamental tips include maintaining strong eye contact, and being genuinely interested in what the other person is saying. Capturing their attention ensures they will remember you, and that is the ultimate goal.
