Networking is an ideal way to meet new business contacts and increase your opportunities. There are multitudes of networking events that occur within everyone's specific industry, and it is at those events that one can expand their contacts considerably. However, it is not as easy as simply showing up, and it takes effort to be successful.

At any networking event, you are bound to receive dozens of business cards, as well as give yours to as many others. But what happens after the event; where do those cards ultimately end up? If you are like most people, you will keep a few of the ones that you thought were most important and store the rest, if not altogether throw them out. The key point to remember is that most people do this, so if you are not seen as important, your information will probably be discarded. Do not worry; as long as you follow a few key tips, you can ensure that your identity will be valued.

Many businesspeople go in to a networking event expecting immediate gratification or rewards. This is nearly impossible and definitely should not be expected. The goal of networking is to gather a few important contacts who you can extensively develop relationships with later. At the networking event, keep conversations short and brief, and make sure to act in a mutually beneficial manner. That is, do not expect the person you are talking with to help you unless you can somehow help them. In fact, you should put more emphasis on how you can assist your contact, as then they will be much more likely to value you and contact you later. When you are talking with them outside of a networking context, then you can move on to the specifics of how you will benefit as well.
