Admit it, starting
a home-based business isn't a walk in the park.
Though there are the promising benefits waiting for the aspiring and
determined entrepreneur, there are also things to be carefully learned before the
starting home based business actually makes money.
What does an individual
have to realize before starting a home-based business?
First, one
must know his market. The aspiring businessman should know the ins and outs of
the market he's about to get involved in.
It is advisable for a former computer salesman to get involved in
trading of computer software, rather than to go into medical
transcription. In the same way, perhaps it's
more comfortable for a journalism graduate to work on blog content writing than
in trading novelty items --- but then again, this is not to say that a person
can never learn the intricacies of a business.
Studying a particular business should help the aspiring entrepreneur in assessing
his or her chances in the said field. Thus,
researching on the hottest novelty items could help the journalism graduate in determining
which products he should come up with for his business.
Also, know the
customers. Who are the particular
individuals more likely to support the business? Are young professionals
interested in buying computer software? Are teenagers inclined to buy bead accessories
and other novelty items? Who are more
likely to spend on clothes?
Go beyond the
usual demographics such as age, race, sex, income and location. Today's trend involves more specific details
on their target market such as description of their personalities and
characteristics. Getting information on the spending habits of the market will
help someone with a starting home-based business to exploit the weaknesses of
his target consumers.
Take care of
your customers. Reward loyal patrons for
their continued support by offering discounts and premiums on certain
purchases. Also, adding a more personal
approach such as giving out thank you cards and dropping a call on them would
prove beneficial in the long run.
Customers know how to appreciate kind words and acts.
Learn to give
the business a competitive edge. This does
not mean claiming that the starting home-based business is the best in the
field. Rather, give the business
something of a trademark which your customers could remember. Claims
such as "shipment of orders always on time" would give the business a
much-added boost in terms of credibility and image.
Find ways to
advertise. Whether it be spending on
banner advertisements or through less expensive means such as posting on
internet message boards, there's always a way to make the public become more
aware of one's products and services.
Once the
income comes in, save some for future investments. If possible, approach potential partners,
investors, or lenders. This would help
the business grow its operations particularly in the long run.
Statistics generally
reveal that starting home based business does not generate much in its first few
weeks of operations. However, be patient. Remember, good things come to those
who have a well-laid business plan.
