Building a Quality Mailing List

Having an up-to-date and high quality mailing list is extremely important for distributing your marketing materials. A mailing list is your key to contacting prospects who may eventually become long term customers. Usually, the more people you get your message to, the better, but that is not the case with a mailing list. For one, each person you add increases the cost of sending out a mailer, so you only want those who have the greatest chance of converting. It is wasteful to send your message to people who would never buy your product, so why do it? You can save money, increase conversions, and improve your bottom line by developing a targeted mailing list.

Deciding who should go on to your list is not rocket science. First, you want all of your previous customers included. Returning customers are actually more important than prospects, because they have a higher chance of buying from you. They have already had experience with your business and know that they like it. Therefore, when they get a new offer from you in the mail, they will be more apt to take action on it. It does not matter whether the money is coming from new or returning customers, and it is ultimately cheaper to make money from existing clients than new ones.

Obtaining a list of new prospects can be somewhat more difficult, or proportionally expensive. You can buy a list of names and contact information from other companies, although keep in mind that the information has probably been sold many times over. You can do your own market research and build a list of prospects yourself, and although this takes more work, it often yields a better quality list than you could ever buy.
