The Necessity of Prospecting

Prospecting is a necessary part of sales in any market, yet some salespeople avoid prospecting altogether. They think that it is unnecessary, or maybe just do not want to do it, as prospecting usually does involve a lot of phone calls, much of them cold. They make excuses, such as prospecting is not needed anymore, or they know someone who is successful and never had to prospect. The truth is, you do need prospecting, and you will not achieve your goals without it.

One thing that deters people from prospecting is the vast array of lead generation systems available. They claim to be able to get you thousands of leads for a low cost, and you will be able to use those leads to make sales for years to come. In any industry, and in life in general, it is important to remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it always is. In this case, the leads you receive are very low quality, and probably are given to hundreds of other people. No program can replace the hard work of an individual, no matter how expensive or appealing it is.

It is true that once you become a top seller, the need for prospecting may decrease a little. You will have people coming to you, and plenty of repeat sales to keep you busy. However, no top seller has gotten where they are by not prospecting. Everybody has to do it at some point in their careers, and even when you reach your vision of success, you probably will have to continue prospecting in one form or another.

Do not get the wrong idea; despite the tone of this article, prospecting can be a pleasant thing. By finding creative ways to prospect, you can make it not seem so much like a chore, and not only will you have more fun, but you will be more effective as well.
