Any Internet marketer out there knows how expensive marketing can be. There are banner ads, text links, pop-ups, and paid SEO. The benefits of marketing are obvious; you get lots of customers who purchase lots of products (hopefully). Even with great marketing, you can end up in the red, from spending too much on marketing and not making enough from customers.
For marketing to work, you have to spend a fair amount of money, and it can become a hefty expense. Webmasters must not look at marketing as an expense though; it must be seen as an investment, since you are putting money in to hopefully get something better in return. And like with real investing, it is how you invest that determines your yield. As stated, large amounts of funds must be used for standard marketing to see good returns, but what if there was a way to spend only a few hundred dollars and get a continuous stream of customers forever?
Affiliate marketing is the new, effective way of the 21st century to market your online product. The concept was started by Amazon.com in 1996, and it was one of the reasons they became so large. Essentially, affiliate marketing is paying someone to send customers to you, but you only pay them when they send you a customer who makes a sale. In this way, you are paying on results, and only results. There are two main ways to implement affiliate marketing. You can have a section on your site dedicated to it, in which you would have a part which explains the program (like commission), and then a system to make it work. Or, you could join one of the various affiliate networks, although joining one usually costs a few hundred dollars. Popular affiliate networks include Commission Junction, ShareASale, and LinkShare.
You may think that starting an affiliate program may be too much of a hassle, but it is one of the smartest marketing moves you can make. Think about it, if you make a good affiliate program, you will attract lots of affiliates, and then you will have many people advertising your product for you. One thing that discourages people from making an affiliate program is that they have to give a large commission to affiliates (remember, there are thousands of affiliate programs out there, so yours has to be good). Think of it this way; these are sales you would not make regularly, so you might as well do it. Since that is the case, you should give as large a commission as possible to make your program as attractive as it can be.
