Establishing a web presence is something many people are interested in doing. It can be as simple as clicking a few buttons, but for an actual website, there are more details involved. As long as you are determined and follow the steps correctly, starting a website is straightforward enough for anyone to do. You need to have a small amount of starting money, as low as twenty dollars. This will be used to purchase necessary services from web development companies. You also should have a basic understanding of hypertext markup language (HTML) so you can competently edit pages.
First, you need to get a domain, which is the web address of your site. For example, www.google.com is the domain of Google. You can choose any name you like as long as it is not already registered. Domains can be purchased from domain registrars, such as GoDaddy.
By this point, the website will be up, but there will be no content. To make content, you must upload files to your website's main directory, which is done either through an FTP client or a control panel provided by the web host. Files are written in HTML, and can be accentuated through other programming languages like PHP and JavaScript. However, any basic page can be made just with HTML, and all web pages, even if written in another web language, require some amount of HTML. Those who are not adept at programming can download templates, or pre-made web pages, from companies for free or for a fee. With templates, webmasters do not need to worry about designing the site, only writing the content. Most people want others to see their website, but people will not come magically. The most basic form of promotion is word of mouth, but unless your site has viral characteristics, this is usually not sufficient. Other ways to promote a site include advertising and search engine optimization, but the specifics of those processes are articles in themselves. There is no other way to start a website than by following these steps. The method in which a site is designed and content created varies, but the bottom line is, a domain and hosting is necessary to make a site appear on the Internet. If you do not want to spend money, there are free domains and free web hosts available, but the control and capabilities given with this method are severely limited. |
