Most under-performing salespeople wonder why they cannot achieve what others around them have. There are several reasons why people cannot reach their full potential in sales, such as lack of motivation, no incentives, or even laziness. Most of these inhibitors can be overcome by doing one simple thing; choosing the right product to sell.
It is critical that you sell something you are passionate about, so the first step in deciding what to sell is to make a list of products that you like. After you have made a list, shorten it to only the things that you adore. At this point, it may be very easy or very difficult to pick that one item to devote yourself to. However, there are other factors which go in to the decision besides personal affection.
You must research whether it is viable to sell a product or not. If you love something, but not many other people do, that something would prove troublesome to sell. The ideal product to choose is something that everybody needs or wants, is relatively affordable, and, of course, something you heavily enjoy yourself.
Choose a product that is a trend or tradition, not a fad. Think of slinkies. Plenty of people loved those when they first came out, and they sold like hotcakes. Like all fads, the growth topped out, the product peaked, and the decline set in. Nowadays it is hard to even find a household that owns a slinky. The lesson is, do not sell a product just because it is performing well now. When you find something that has everlasting appeal, you know you have found a fine choice.
Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to discover a product you truly love selling. Your first choice may not be as well a fit as you expected it to be. Or, you may sell something for a few years and then find it to be not as engaging as it once was. This is alright; when this happens, you can decide whether or not you should sell a different product. It is not good to switch often, however, because that usually means changing companies or making other significant alterations in your life.
