Implementing Effective Sales Presentations

The sales presentation is arguably the most important step of the sales process (although the same can be said for any of the other steps). Although the presentation is formally a single step, most successful salespeople view the presentation as beginning the moment you walk in the client's door. Effectiveness is also assured through prior research about who you are selling to, whether it is a business or individual.

Before you jump in to the specifics of what you are selling, it is important that you connect with the prospect. If the prospect is not friendly with you on a personal level, they will not have as much respect for your presentation and thus be less likely to buy. Being a friend is as critical to making the sale as the presentation itself, so do not skimp on the time dedicated to this preliminary activity. In the vast majority of cases (including outside the sales world), it will take more than one day to become acquainted with someone, so it is okay if you cannot close the sale immediately.

Presenting to a client can be nerve racking, but never let it show. Nobody wants to buy from someone who is unsure of what they are selling, because it reflects on the quality of the product. If you are unmitigated in your enthusiasm for your product, the prospect will feel the same way. The best way to achieve this is by truly believing in your product, and channeling that belief in to a productive, strong presentation. In cases where you lack this belief, you should find another product to sell. Of course, you also need developed sales skills to ultimately close the deal, but by combining those skills with fundamental passion, you ensure your own success.
