Finding a new product to sell can be a difficult challenge. Perhaps you have been selling the same thing for nearly your whole life, and making a transition is something you do not want to do. Or if you do want to switch products, you may not have enough knowledge about anything else to immediately enter that field. Regardless of the reason, it is possible to discover a new calling, and although it may take time to adjust, it is an inherent quality of humans to be able to adapt.
In the first case, you may be forced out of your job, probably by market conditions. For example, if the automobile industry is doing very poorly right now, and if you are a car salesman, you may be out of a job now or in the near future. You cannot stay unemployed forever, and it is necessary to get a new job as soon as possible. So the big question is, "What to move on to?"
There are two primary methods of making this critical decision. The first is to enter the most profitable industry. Find what is hot right now, and start selling that. Odds are that you do not possess extensive knowledge about that industry, but information can be quickly absorbed from books or the Internet. The possible problems with this method include the fact that you may not enjoy selling whatever is popular right now, or the product is only a fad and will fade away in the near future. It is up to you to decide whether the product is here to stay or will be around for just a day (probably a little longer, though).
The method most people prefer is selling what they like. If you can find something that is in demand and of your own personal interest, that is great. As long as you favor a wide line of products, you are bound to find one that you and others like.
