Becoming a salesperson is more than just about making money, even though commerce is the primary activity in this career. Selling products is about helping people find things that will improve their lives, or make things easier for them in some way. Ultimately, like many careers, sales is about helping people.
When people think of helpful careers, the medical or engineering professions come to mind. However, there are many other careers that are indirectly beneficial, although sales is more direct. Think back to your own experience. When a salesperson matches you with a product that you really like, and truly assists you in some way, you feel good. In this world, materialistic items are necessary to get by, and if you do not have the right tools at your disposal, it is hard to feel happy or content. A salesperson is an integral part of finding the best fit between you and a product, and one often forgets how important that is until the sales position is gone.
One major problem with the sales industry is the common consumer's perception of it. They see the sales world as a pushy environment where the business only cares about taking their money. Many people do not realize just how vital the salesperson really is. As a salesperson, it is important to work hard to change this perception, and that starts with how you do business. If somebody does not need your product, do not forcefully attempt to find a way to make them have it. Sometimes the product is not a match for a particular customer, and in that case, one just has to move on to the next prospect. There is no shame in not making a sale, but there is in making an unnecessary one.
