Having a place in your customer's mind is similar to the products in a grocery store. The best and most profitable products are on eye level and easy to get to, while inferior selections are harder to find and not as quick to reach. This metaphor is the perfect analogy for how customers rank businesses in their minds. Customers put the highest quality businesses at the forefront of their thoughts, and pay little attention to those firms they deem substandard. While it is possible to be successful holding a place other than first, you will obviously do a lot better if you are number one in the customers' minds.

Everybody wants to be number one, but a firm needs to take specific action in order to achieve that coveted spot. One of the simplest ways to do this is provide a great product at a fair price over a long period of time. By constantly running sales promotions and working with customers, you will naturally develop good will. It does not take elaborate schemes to be well known, for as long as you are consistent with quality operations, people will come to recognize you.

It also helps to add free services to your paid offerings. The more value you can add to a product, the better, and there are always ways to add value. For example, you could include a free extended warranty with your product, or give discounts in exchange for the purchase of a large ticket item. There are endless, innovative ways to create value in the customer's mind, so never stop thinking about what you can do to make your offering more attractive.
