Using Relationship Selling in an Industrial Sales Environment

The best way to increase your sales and productivity is through building relationships with existing clients. Most salespeople nowadays stop conversing with a client once they have closed the sale; they move onto the next prospect in their list. The key to higher sales does not lie in new prospects, it exists within existing customers. Most people you sell to only buy a fraction of what you have to offer. If you can get these clients to simply purchase different or more products from your catalog, it will be as if you have gained a new customer entirely.

In a business sense, all of your clients are concerned with one thing; improving their own bottom line and productivity. It is your job to provide them with the necessary tools and information they need to do this. Illustrate to your clients how owning more products will ultimately help them, even if it is a temporary, added expense up front. Do not just stop after you have closed the sale, though. Your clients' success is your success, so continually stay in contact with all of your customers to make sure they are using their resources to maximum capacity.

Converting new prospects into long-time customers is much more difficult than transforming current clients into loyal buyers. Gaining more market share is easier when you have an established, large following behind you. Prospects see and hear how your products are so helpful and efficient, and they flock to you, as opposed to being found. You can also get testimonials from clients and use them as a tool to convince potential customers that you are an optimal solution for their needs.

Effective relationship building means advancing beyond your regular contacts and meeting the higher-ups of a company. This means bosses, associates, and CEOs. Working at a lower level may be adequate enough for sales, but to become widely known and respected, the senior officials of a business must know who you are and how you are helping them.
