The initial steps of goal setting can seem both daunting and fun, but your goals will be meaningless if you are unable to follow through with them. The point of goals is to get you farther in life, to make you more productive, to increase your net assets, or to achieve a variety of personal objectives. Goal setting in of itself is nothing to be proud of, as it is the tangible, meaningful achievements you reach that define you as successful.
One of the main problems with goal setting nowadays is that people aim too high. They set a goal that is unachievable, and then get frustrated when they cannot reach it. This is especially true in sales. Salespeople want to reach an unrealistic sales quota, and upon falling short, start doing much more poorly because of a lack of confidence and motivation. By setting small goals, you consistently fortify your skills and increase your self-esteem. It is important that the goals are not too small, though, as you still want to challenge yourself adequately.
When trying to change your habits, do not set the goal to "become a new, better person" the next day. Implementing a monumental personality shift in such a short time is impossible, and has only been done on a few occasions in history. You cannot change who you are in a matter of hours. Therefore, set the goal to change a habit in a short time, and once you have modified that, move on to the next one. Changing slowly ensures that one day you will be a highly efficient and effective person, both in sales and personally.
